The Alpine Historical Association created an instant classic last Saturday night with the Christmas in Alpine Light Stroll, which culminated in the tree lighting on the Sul Ross campus.
The weather was perfect, the crowd easygoing. About 2,000 luminarias lit the entire pathway along Sul Ross Avenue from 5th Street and up through the campus over to Lawrence Hall, and most of the homes along the way were decorated for the season. The work that AHA Director Abbey Branch and company put into the event is incredible.
Don’t miss it next year. Better yet, volunteer to help. I know I will.
Here are some highlights:
The high school bands from Alpine, Presidio and Fort Stockton combined with the Alpine Community Band for a performance at the south entrance of Sul Ross, facing the Christmas tree outside of Lawrence Hall.
Dr. Jimmy Case, who is retiring next spring, flipped the switch to turn on the Christmas tree outside of Lawrence Hall at SRSU.

Wonderful event! Great to see new traditions getting off the ground.
We truly enjoyed the first “Christmas Stroll”! It’s no secret we love Alpine and Christmas. It was great to see old friends, the children smiling, making crafts, seeing Santa (or the Grinch) and bringing bands together to play amazing music. Sul Ross Ave. looked beautiful all lit up in luminaries. I wish they could be lit all during the holiday season. Everyone’s home was so welcoming and nicely decorated.
Thank you Abbey for taking time out of your busy schedule to come home and to bring family and friends together. What a beautiful Christmas gift you have given the community and the Big Bend region.
We are excited for next year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Alpine,TX!
