Eaves, Rangra will face off for mayor
Last minute filings resulted in three contested elections within the school district and city boundaries for Alpine.
The deadline was Friday, Feb. 18, at 5 p.m.
In the Alpine ISD Board of Trustees election, Haley Babb filed to run against incumbent Justin Cross in Single Member District 5, and Elpidia Lujan filed to run against incumbent Mary McCallister in Single Member District 7.
Districts 5 and 7 are the only two open for election this year. Both Babb and Lujan filed on the final day.
School board elections in Texas have a separate deadline for write-in candidates, which is Tuesday, Feb. 22, and a deadline to withdraw from the ballot, which is Friday, Feb. 25.

In the Alpine City Council races, incumbents Chris Rodriguez (Ward 2) and Martin Sandate (Ward 4) both filed for re-election.
In the mayoral race, Catherine Eaves and Amit Rangra, the son of former Mayor Avinash Rangra, will vie for the gavel.
School board members serve for three years at a time, and are not term limited. City council members serve for two years at a time with a maximum of three consecutive terms.
Early voting will be held April 25 through May 3. Election Day is Saturday, May 7. Ballots for both the council and school board are cast at the City Council Chambers at 803 W. Holland Avenue.
Note: These races are separate from the Texas Primary, for which early voting is being held now. Primary Election Day is March 1.
